Costume Process
Here are some examples of the way I work with the costumes for a production. I tend to create a mood board with extensive references for each character, alongside the actors photograph and important notes about the character(s) they play. I usually produce drawings for each character but I like to keep the reference boards alongside these, so that neither supervisors nor cast get too fixated on something in the drawing which may not be the main point. This is especially useful when the clothes will be bought or hired. If the drawing includes a rust coloured scarf, it may be that the colour is less significant than the shape or texture, and there may be a far more appropriate scarf available. Thus keeping the reference looser helps with this.
Some of my drawings are still hand drawn, but a lot of the time I now draw them directly onto an iPad which allows for speedy sharing and also changes to the sketch following discussion with the director and cast.
