The Canterbury Tales
Directed by Abigail Anderson
Site-specific performance in the oldest church in Guildford
Produced by Guildford Shakespeare Company
The company told five of the Canterbury Tales, each of which was presented in a different theatrical style with one member of the cast in charge of his or her tale. The set was built into the nave of the church, to incorporate a scaffold upper level, an oval shape raised timber stage, and using other areas including the pulpit for the Pardoner. Some tales were poetic and beautiful, some were darkly comic, and the Nun's Priest Tale used puppetry. They were all set in different time periods. Design challenges were numerous; dealing with a listed church, natural daylight during matinees, very difficult sight lines and a cast of 5 all playing instruments and in multiple roles.
